Emphasis on helping small food producers on World Food Day

Progress is being made toward reducing global hunger. Still, more than 12% of the world's people -- some 870 million -- are starving and chronically malnourished, according to the United Nations. On World Food Day, there are various ways to get involved, even simply by hosting a dinner. A photo essay captures the scope of the challenges, which José Graziano da Silva, head of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, says can be overcome by better assisting smaller food producers. • Urbanization offers chances to go green, UN says
While urbanization will place strains on countries in coming decades, it also will provide governments -- notably, China and India -- with opportunities to promote biodiversity by building more parks, trees and roof gardens, according to a study by the United Nations. Urban dwellers are projected to reach 4.9 billion by 2030. AlertNet/Reuters (10/15) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

Is "green crude" -- biofuel made from microalgae -- all that it's cracked up to be? A 300-acre farm in New Mexico aims to unlock the energy potential of algae, carbon dioxide, water and sunlight -- pointing the way to a potentially game-changing process that would enable nearly any country to make its own oil and reduce carbon emissions. Two of every three Algerians are younger than 30, but most of the country's leaders came of age during the war for independence 50 years ago.
