Marking the first International Day of the Girl

Thursday is the first International Day of the Girl. The date, 10-11-12, is meaningful in being "the ages that for many girls, the world becomes a much more dangerous place," writes Daphne Bramham. The United Nations has designated the day to spotlight issues including child marriage, poor access to education, domestic violence, sex-selective abortion and infanticide. • UN fund to be a developing-world investment
The United Nations International Labour Organization is asking wealthy countries to contribute $20 billion to a fund that would provide a social safety net for vulnerable people in the 48 least developed countries. Those governments would be expected to contribute the other two-thirds of the overall $60 billion cost, or about 6% of gross domestic product. "This is an investment, not a handout. ... Acting preventively is much less expensive than intervention on an ad hoc basis," said Olivier De Schutter, UN special rapporteur for food. • UN adjusts approach to helping Somalia
Three agencies of the United Nations -- the Food and Agriculture Organization, World Food Program and UNICEF -- are joining to help Somalians better withstand and adapt to threats. David Nabarro, special representative of the UN secretary-general, said the on-the-ground goal is to establish "new forms of accountability, new forms of analysis, new ways of working." • Yunus: Tech offers hope for real change
Technology is helping people improve their lives at home, but the Social Good Summit also demonstrated how it's helping people gain a great voice internationally, writes Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and United Nations Foundation board member. "People are hungry to be heard and today's technologies give them a voice in their local communities and in the world. ... We need to harness these technologies to ensure that all voices, especially the voices of those directly impacted by global problems, are part of the dialogue," he writes. • Marriage of tech, toilets is key to sanitation
The potential for business is fueling the search for sustainable technological solutions to the world's sanitation crises. The biggest challenge remains making better toilets that are not only affordable, but also easy to use in some of the world's poorest areas. BBC (10/8) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

A low-cost, low-polluting stove that uses biochar -- typically used to improve soil -- has been developed by two men from Montreal who are raising money to distribute their PlanetStove in China.
