New solutions needed for victims of forced migration, Red Cross says

There are myriad reasons why more than 70 million people have been uprooted and are living as migrants: armed conflict, disasters, politics, development work, climate change. Whatever the reason, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies says in a report that governments should do more to help forced migrants -- whether it is issuing temporary work visas or granting new forms of citizenship. • Cooking shouldn't kill, says Ghana's Dawuni
"Cooking kills people, to the shocking tune of 2 million each year," writes Ghanaian musician Rocky Dawuni, a new ambassador for the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves of the United Nations Foundation. "I look at this issue personally. In my native Ghana, where according to WHO statistics, more than 87% of the population is impacted by so-called household air pollution each day," he writes. • Helping women overcome poor educations
The term "education widows" is being applied to young women in northern Ghana who have attended school so poor that they are unqualified for most jobs. UNESCO reports that most women ages 15 to 29 cannot read even one sentence after six years of schooling. The organization Camfed is trying to remedy this. • UN: Future of biofuels is small, local
What to do about biofuels? New calculations suggest that U.S. and EU biofuel-production policies are causing food prices to climb by billions of dollars for the world's poor, food-importing countries. Olivier De Schutter, the United Nations special rapporteur on the right to food, explores the consequences of growing crops for both food and fuel, concluding that "if biofuels are to have a future, they must think small-scale and local."
