Progress made against global warming, but more needed, UN official says

Governments are taking steps toward a global agreement to hold temperatures below a 2-degree rise, but the measures "actually represent 60% of the global effort that needs to be made," said Christiana Figueres, the United Nations climate chief. Climate talks are scheduled for next month in Doha, Qatar, and Brazil's chief climate negotiator has said that rich countries should bear a greater burden in reducing carbon emissions. Obama secured a pledge from Netanyahu not to attack Iran's nuclear program before the U.S. presidential election, while giving Netanyahu his intention to "do what we must" to keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Agricultural and technological developments are important in efforts to reduce hunger and malnutrition worldwide, but civil society groups say that the best weapon is human rights.
