UNESCO report: Life-skills training for global youth urgently needed

Progress has been spotty in meeting the educational needs of children, but nowhere is investment more urgent than in the teaching of life skills to teenagers and young adults, according to the latest Education for All Global Monitoring Report from UNESCO. "Education is not only about making sure all children can attend school. ... At a wider level, it is about helping countries nurture the workforce they need to grow in the global economy," UNESCO chief Irina Bokova said. • Enlisting creative media from UN's front lines
Creative outlets such as Variety magazine are essential in helping to tell the stories that "occur in the shadows of society" -- tales involving social issues such as global health, sustainable energy and women and girls, writes Kathy Calvin, head of the United Nations Foundation. "The UN bears witness to incredible stories every day, but it needs the help of the creative community to tell them," she writes.
