[RED DEMOCRATICA] Coments.: Re: Border Wars [5 Attachments]

Hi David,

We met briefly at the walk for Human Rights Day in Newark. I was the gringita with the brown coat. ;) This is an email that I sent to Chia Chia. I am also sending it to everyone I know who might have an interest. I have family members who are Mexican so this is a very important issue to me. Please pass it along if you are as concerned as I am.

Corry Gunson

Hi Chia Chia,

I am concerned over a new upcoming series that has been advertised on National Geographic called Borders Wars.  The new series will begin Jan 10. It seems it will vilified "illegal aliens" , the majority of whom are Mexican people. They are lumped together as criminals with drug dealers and others. Even the title of the series is misleading. I don't see people who are attempting to find a way to work and feed their families as our "enemies" and I am not personally at war with them. I find it offensive that National Geographic depicts our neighbors, Mexican citizens, as our "enemy", as MY enemy!

At a time when our Nation and President is trying to solve a very complex issue, it is appalling that a main stream and well respected organization like National Geographic is perpetuating more misleading information and hatred. This is simply unproductive at best. I have included some of the "statistics" that Nat-Geo has posted on it's site. You can also see the rather scarey photos of these aggressive looking military men dressed in war garments to attack our Mexican neighbors. There is even a mention of the Minute Men on the weekly TV advertisement. I am not certain how these vigilantes will be portrayed but I surely hope they are not glorified as patriotic.

I feel that as a community we should speak out against this series. Perhaps each regional office of AFSC can send an email/fax/letter to National Geographic. Perhaps the affiliated community groups can join in also. Perhaps there is a chance it will not air.

As always, thank you for the work that you do at AFSC.

Sincerely,
Corry Gunson

From the National Geographic Site:
"NO EASY TASK
The U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) uses an unmanned aircraft called the Predator B Drone to observe the border and convey information to the proper authorities. Even with the best technology, patrolling the border between the U.S. and Mexico is no easy job.

*   The aircraft Predator B can stay at an altitude of 50,000 feet for up to 30 hours at a time.
*   CBP oversees the flight plan for Predator B and passes information to in-field agents.
*   CBP confiscates over 7,500 pounds of illegal drugs in a normal day.
*   In 2007, CBP took control of more than 14,000 pounds of cocaine and nearly two million pounds of marijuana. If the confiscated drugs were sold on the street today, their value would amount to more than $1.5 billion.
*   In 2007 alone, the U.S. CBP arrested 877,000 migrants who were trying to illegally cross the U.S.-Mexico border.
*   The CBP Office of Air and Marine Operations obtained its first UH-60 Black Hawk in the summer of 2009. The helicopter is used to observe the Arizona borders.
*   Convicted criminals amounted to 27 percent of the arrests made in 2008.
*   In 2008, the overwhelming majority of apprehensions occurred at the southwest border. More than 90 percent of the individuals detained were citizens of Mexico.
*   In 2008, CBP found an average of 76 falsified documents every day.
*   The nearly 2,000-mile-long border between the U.S. and Mexico has one of the highest volumes of border crossings in the world. "
