[RED DEMOCRATICA] Colombia, USA and India films released on the first private free film channel on Youtube

Chennai, November 29, 2011. - Witches' Night", Official Selection of the Orlando Film Festival 2010 and showcased at the Puerto Rico International Film Festival Vieques Island 2011, was released to the world today at http://www.castellano.hugosantander.com/film.html.

"Witches' Night," written, produced and directed by Hugo Santander, portrays the story of Fabian and Betty, two children who sell raffle's spots in order to get money for Halloween customs. Their endeavors are cut short by the suspicion of his parents, who unwillingly unleash a family tragedy. "There are no monsters here," says Santander, now an Associate Professor at SRM University in Chennai, the first university to offer cinema as a career in India, "there are no guilty ones in this story. Each act according to his/her social role, tragically misunderstood by a child."

The film was produced with a micro-budget of five thousand dollars. "Unfortunately most filmmakers make films for profit," he explains, "they also tailor their scripts for an Oscar or an invitation to Cannes. I make films with what I can. The great obstacle to make cinema today is not money, but attitude. We have developed strategies for low-budget film production," he adds referring to "Resourceful Cinema", book partially published in his blog (http://hugosantander.blogspot.com/2011/08/introduction-to-resourceful-cinema.html). "It is an interdisciplinary approach from semiotics and philosophy, but also from my experience as independent theater director in Bogotá. The excess of the digital age allows us to produce works that were unthinkable fifteen years ago." His artistic talent is more expressive in "po: portrait of a broken Wall Street Broker," a metaphysical film awarded with the Motion Picture Association Scholarship Temple University in 1996 and Official Selection at the North Carolina Film Festival 1997 and the Chicago Latino Film Festival 1997.

"Witches' Night" is the fifth film released by First Film Productions at the "Santander Cinema" along films such as "Kennedy's Crimes" (2011) a thriller on the rampant corruption in Colombia, and "Manatí" (2005) a travel documentary on the failure of the agrarian reform on Colombia's Atlantic coast.

Hugo Santander is a multitalented artist: poet, philosopher, linguist, writer, graphic designer, documentary maker, film director, editor, playwright, actor, photographer and storyteller. He has made a documentary for the Portuguese Radio and Television and is the author of "New Manhattan Soirées" (Barcelona 2002) novel about the Latin-American immigration. Its first chapter is available at his website (http://www.hugosantander.com/novels_archivos/ntm.html). He is also co-author of "Essentials of Philosophy and Ethics" (Hodder, 2006), for which he wrote a definition of God, an event that he had already anticipated in the third chapter of "New Manhattan Soirées." There, Ulfilas, first translator of the Bible into German, must define God to the invaders for the survival of half of Europe.
Asked on the non-profit nature of his work, he replies with a smile: "We return to the roots of art," "the hierarchies of literary criticism are cracking, and sooner or later they will fall apart.  The Internet is the only arena of ideas and audiovisual projects". His work has the virtue of captivating faculties from all around the world.  His curriculum includes academic positions in USA, Portugal, Kyrgyzstan, England, Colombia and India. He's currently directing "Civilization" his play about transcontinental migration, produced by the Masquerade Theatre of Chennai. The play will be presented at the Madras Theatre Festival next year. For January 1, 2012 Santander will premiere his most ambitious film project,  "Hamlet Unbound" a Shakespearean adaptation of the classic, in which Santander plays the role of the Danish Prince, now the son of a Philadelphia tycoon:
