Fewer people go hungry, but still too many, FAO says

Fewer people went hungry over the past two years than during the same period a decade ago, but 1 in 8 people -- or about 868 million, nearly all of them in developing countries -- are still chronically undernourished, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. "That is unacceptable, especially when we live in a world of plenty," writes FAO chief Jose Graziano da Silva, who adds that momentum is needed to achieve the first Millennium Development Goal of halving hunger worldwide by 2015. • Broader Syrian relief effort to save children
An agreement between UNICEF and the Syrian government would allow humanitarian workers to move beyond the capital, Damascus, in an effort to help citizens, including vaccinating 1 million children. "Clearly thousands of children have been killed and tens of thousands and now hundreds of thousands have been uprooted," said Anthony Lake, head of the UN children's fund. • Children take up arms in Mali as diplomacy stalls
Calls to muster an international force to dislodge Islamist militants from Mali's northern territories have stalled at the United Nations amid concerns from neighboring countries and about the plan of action. Children as young as 11 are being recruited by Islamists, and militias in the country's south -- intent on retaking the north -- are conscripting boys as young as 14. • Wheat self-sufficiency eyed in sub-Saharan Africa
A study suggests that countries in sub-Saharan Africa could grow significantly more wheat as "a hedge against food insecurity, political instability and price shocks." Without greater wheat production, African nations are likely to "face more hunger, instability and even political violence," according to the nonprofit International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center. • Pakistani teen activist wounded in gun attack
Malala Yousafzai, the young Pakistani teenager who won a national award for bravery in recognition of her campaign for girls' education, was injured after unidentified gunmen reportedly fired on schoolgirls in the northwestern Swat Valley. "We have to fight the mindset that is involved in this. We have to condemn it. ... Malala is like my daughter, and yours too. If that mindset prevails, then whose daughter would be safe?" said Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf. BBC (10/9) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Egypt's proposed constitution alarms women's groups
The transition from dictatorship to democracy in Egypt could mean fewer protections for minorities and women. Islamists have emerged as the main political force, prompting nearly three dozen women's rights groups last week to protest the proposed constitution -- especially Article 36, which says men and women are guaranteed equal rights "as long as those rights are not contradicting the laws of Islam." • Mexico trumpets gains against Zetas cartel
Mexican authorities believe they have killed Heriberto Lazcano, the leader of the Zetas drug gang, only a day after they captured a Zetas regional leader suspected in the deaths of 72 Central and South American migrants, as well as hundreds of others whose bodies were discovered in unmarked graves. The death of Lazcano, the country's most wanted man, and the arrest of Salvador Alfonso Martínez Escobedo would mark a victory for the country's military-led offensive against drug cartels.
