Piuran Delegation from Northern Peru Visits Utah
With a focus on promoting public and private investment, and creating equal opportunity for all citizens of the region, the Piuran Regional government was launched in 2004 and has already demonstrated significant improvements in many sectors of life for the people of northern Peru. Cesar Delgadillo, president of the Piuran Region, joined by a distinguished delegation representing both the government and the university in Piura were hosted by the Governor's Office of Economic Development, World Trade Center Utah and the Salt Lake Chamber at a luncheon on Tuesday, July 20. The delegation was warmly greeted by a large audience of both Utah businesses and university representatives.
As President Delgadillo explained, the five pillars of development that are critical for the Piuran people to move forward include: social development, transparency in government, economic development, opportunities for the people and land management. To this end, the Regional government has made significant strides in many key areas such as reduction of infant deaths and malnutrition, availability of drinking water and electricity. Illiteracy was at 15% in 2004, has already been reduced to 9% in 2010 and the goal is zero in 2020.
Of the 24 regions in Peru, Piura represents number 8 in economic size with over 1.5 million people divided between the coastal region and the mountainous interior. Investment opportunities that President Delgadillo described to the audience included projects in agriculture, fisheries, mining, hydro-energy and tourism. Following the luncheon, many participants took advantage of the offer to meet one-on-one with the entire Piuran delegation.
