LATINOS TO ADDRESS: REP. SANDSTROM "ARIZONA LIGHT" IMMIGRATION BILL

Salt Lake City – The Utah Coalition of La Raza (UCLR) and Proyecto Latino de Utah and will hold Press Conference at Centro Civico Mexicano on Thursday, August 12, 2010 to address Representative Stephen Sandstrom "Arizona Light" immigration draft bill that he will introduced in the next few days. 

 

Archie Archuleta, President of UCLR and Tony Yapias will address how this proposed bill could impact Utahns. Archie Archuleta said, "We will remind Rep. Sandstrom that immigration is a federal issue and Utahns will not accept patchwork legislation"

 

Supporters of SB1070 said that it would stand a legal challenge and it was constitutional. Recently, U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton blocked key provisions of SB1070 including the parts that requires police to determine the status of people they stop and think are undocumented.  Representative Stephen Sandstrom has watered down SB1070 into an "Arizona Light" immigration bill despite the lawsuit.  Over the last month many Utahns have become more aware of the responsibilities of the Federal government and the States when it comes to immigration.

 

Other organizations supporting these efforts are La Casa del Pueblo, Utah Mexican Federation Clubs and Centro Civico Mexicano.
