Racers driving vehicles powered by electricity from renewable energy sources began a multicountry racing competition Monday to raise awareness and inspire action on passenger vehicles powered by nonpolluting fuels. Iranian authorities announced plans Monday to build 10 more uranium-enrichment sites in defiance of United Nations Security Council sanctions aimed at containing the country's nuclear program. Iran, which plans to begin construction early next year, says the new sites are needed to meet domestic energy needs over the next 15 years. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also announced the implementation of a new law banning most cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency. Afghan President Hamid Karzai has called on private security companies relied on by the U.S. to do much of the work of daily security to leave Afghanistan within four months -- a move that has stunned U.S. officials, who said that the deadline is too ambitious.
