UN's Ladsous: Bolster UNAMID to protect Darfur civilians
The joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping force in Darfur, UNAMID, needs to be better equipped, better positioned and more proactive in protecting civilians, UN peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous told the Security Council on Wednesday. A report from Ladsous also called for UNAMID to have "greater force mobility and an expanded patrol footprint." The displaced in the Darfur region number nearly 2 million, including 100,000 over the past six weeks. The Associated Press (3/12), Reuters (3/12)

UN: Narcotics fight suffers in Afghanistan, parts of Africa
The global fight against narcotics has reduced cocaine production and consumption but not prevented a bumper opium crop in Afghanistan and a surge in trafficking-linked violence in Central America, says Yury Fedotov, United Nations anti-drug chief. "We are strongly concerned about the vulnerability of some regions, notably West Africa and East Africa, to illicit drug trafficking," he says. Reuters (3/13)

WHO assumes health care burden in conflict states
Civil strife in Central African Republic, South Sudan and Syria is preventing those governments from providing health care services, leaving the World Health Organization and other aid groups to provide medical care, said Richard Brennan, WHO director of emergency risk management. Aid workers are hampered by a lack of funding and a dangerous working environment. "The idea of the sanctity of health care, the neutrality of health care, has been lost in a lot of these crises," he said. Google/Agence France-Presse (3/12)
