Water resources under pressure by energy needs, unequal access
Saturday is World Water Day, and two reports highlight the pressures on this resource. The United Nations World Water Development Report says rising energy needs will strain water resources, especially in developing countries, with demand rising by 55% in 2050 from today's 15%. Separately, a report by WaterAid says that wealthy donors have failed to make good on financial aid for sanitation and water projects from 2002 to 2012, leaving many needy countries without adequate access to these basic resources. Wastewater-produced biogas could be rural energy alternative
Biogas, which is produced by the breakdown of organic material such as manure and sewage, could be used as a renewable energy source in many countries and could especially help rural communities gain access to a sustainable energy supply, says the latest United Nations World Water Development Report. "In developing countries, particularly in warm climates ... generating biogas from wastewater can be very useful. This is now a widespread practice in many cities in Africa and in Asia," the report says. SciDev.net (3/21)

Ukraine's interim prime minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, and EU leaders today agreed on a deal permitting closer economic and political cooperation between the parties. Some elements of the agreement regarding free trade must await signatures until after Ukraine's presidential elections take place in May. "[This] recognizes the aspirations of the people of Ukraine to live in a country governed by values, by democracy and the rule of law, where all citizens have a stake in national prosperity," said Herman Van Rompuy, head of the European Council.
